Geocaching

Groundspeak’s Geocaching iPhone Application

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online.

Now you can geocache using your Apple iPhone and Groundspeak’s Geocaching iPhone Application.

How It Works

The iPhone 3G and 3GS use a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning and cell towers to determine your approximate location. Groundspeak’s iPhone Application then queries the Geocaching.com database in real-time and provides a list of geocaches near you.

Available in English, Dutch, French, German and Japanese language versions.

Instant, direct access to Geocaching.com’s database of worldwide geocaches

  • Search by current location, address or GC code
  • Filter your hides and finds from the Geocaching.com search results
  • Access geocache details, including description, recent logs, hint and inventory
  • Look up trackable item details, including item goals, while on the trail
  • Save geocache listings for quick retrieval
  • Log geocache finds and post notes in the field
  • Download active pocket queries for use while outside of network coverage

Advanced navigation capabilities

  • View nearby caches on the embedded map
  • View cache size, terrain and difficulty rating directly from the map screen
  • Navigate to geocaches with a simulated compass arrow or directly from the map screen
  • Add custom waypoints when navigating to multi-caches
  • Switch between street, topographic and satellite maps

Supported Devices

Groundspeak’s Geocaching Application is best supported by the iPhone 3G or 3GS, but is also compatible with the iPod Touch and 1st generation iPhones.

Please note: You will need Wi-Fi access for the application to work on the iPod Touch. Also, without GPS, compass navigation will not work on the 1st generation iPhone.

iGeoCacher

Native OS version of the popular iGeoCacher web application for paperless GeoCaching. Cache information from several popular data formats is now stored directly in the local SQLite database making true “off-line” paperless geocaching a reality for the iPhone. This also enfrachises the iPod Touch users as they can now view geocache information off line. Users of the new 3G iPhone will also enjoy seamless integration of cache information with the on-board GPS.

Geocaching Buddy

The ultimate tool for the serious geocacher when solving multi-caches. This buddy app will remember every clue found and will calculate any derived clue or new waypoint for you. Waypoints can be formula’s or projections. Also the final cache formula will be evaluated the moment all clues are found and entered. It is also able to record you parking spot so you’ll be able to return to your car after finding the cache.

Integrates with Geopher Lite and iGeocacher (separate products) for precise navigating from waypoint to waypoint. Calculated new waypoints can also be shown on the Map (when internet is available). But you can also use a separate GPSr by manually entering the calculated result in such a device.

SEE BEFORE YOU BUY: To get an idea of the functionality, have a look at the demo screencast at the support website www.btstsoft.nl or YouTube.

Main features

  • Prepare a multi-cache at home (now with ‘easy edit’ web interface)
  • Navigate to the parking location
  • Enter answers to questions posed at a waypoint
  • Calculate new waypoints using these answers
  • Calculate the cache location using all answers found
  • Make log notes while caching
  • Find your way back to the parking
  • Backup all information entered for this cache
  • Manage the list of caches

Geocaching Toolkit iGCT

Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure.
A multi-cache involves two or more locations. Clues guide the geocacher from location to location. Sometimes these clues involve a puzzle, some calculations (e.g. on text or using roman numbers) or projecting a new waypoint using distances and bearings. Sometimes the calculations are easy, but this toolkit can help when calculations become tedious while out there in the field.

This geocaching toolkit can help you using the following features:

Waypoint Calculations

  • Conversion of degrees, minutes and seconds to other formats
  • Conversion between WGS84 and UTM coordinates
  • For my Dutch friends the RD coordinates are included
  • Also the Swiss grid is supported
  • Show the entered Latitude/Longitude using the iPhone map application
  • Project a waypoint by specifying distance and bearing
  • Calculate distance and bearing between two waypoints
  • Intersect two lines using two waypoints and bearings
  • Intersect two circles using two waypoints and distances

Text Calculations

  • Calculate the sum of the character values in one or more words
  • Choose between a=1, b=2 etc., the inverse a=26, b=25 etc. or the phonepad abc=2, def=3 etc.
  • Also calculate the sum of all digits of the result
  • Repeat summation of digits until 1 digit remains

Hint decryption

  • Decrypt encrypted hint text to plain text

Roman numbers

  • Convert between roman numbers and decimal values and vice versa

NOTE: This toolkit will work on an iPhone and an iPod touch.
If you use the GPS to determine your current location, best results are obtained using an iPhone 3G.
Calculated locations can be shown on google maps provided you have an internet connection.

Geocaching with Geosphere

Geosphere is for those who are familiar with geocaching, know how to create GPX files, are looking for a way to store cache information offline as well as navigate to caches using an iPhone or iTouch. Geosphere utilizes the GPS receiver inside of 3G iPhones to more accurately determine your location.

Geosphere can:
-Import GPX or LOC files
-Import custom GSAK fields like Corrected Coordinate.
-Import ZIP archives containing multiple GPX files.
-Display a simulated compass showing direction to cache.
-Display description, hint, past logs, inventory.
-For a given waypoint, show all other related waypoints.
-Organize caches into the groups of your choosing.
-Filter by group, type, size, difficulty, terrain, found, distance, …
-Sort filtered search results by distance, waypoint, or name.
-Highlight caches so they get your attention.
-Ignore caches that you don’t want to do right now.
-Create field notes which can be uploaded to make log entries.
-Create custom bookmarks for the built-in browser.
-View details of a target cache as well as another cache.
-If you update a coordinate, original location is saved.
-Can manually enter your location to locate nearby caches.

If online, you can:
-View video tutorials.
-Access satellite images showing the cache location.
-View geocaching.com website showing caches nearby.
-Download new or updated information for an individual cache (for example, if you want more log entries).
-Use the browser to generate a “Pocket Query”.
Then load the resulting GPX files via webmail.
All while on the road.

Information is loaded into Geosphere using the build-in browser in the standard GPX (or the more limited LOC) file format from virtually any website which provides the ability to download files.

Including:
-For GPX files sent to you via email, download them by using a webmail interface to many supported email providers.

-For registered users of their website, geocaching.com provides a button for initiating downloads of individual caches.

-Download files from online file storage services.

-Bottom line, if you can access a GPX file via the built-in browser, it can be loaded into Geosphere.

Note: Geosphere is not associated with geocaching.com. If you want to generate GPX files from geocaching.com, they require a PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP.

iPlunder – Pirate GPX Reader

Yarrr, time to set sail, me hearties, in search of geocache treasure!

If you have a premium geocaching membership (and who doesn’t?) you know the single best benefit is the ability to run pocket queries. Pocket queries generate GPX files. Those GPX files can be loaded onto your GPS device, saving you from hand-entering each geocache.

But wait, there’s more! These helpful GPX files also contain a wealth of information on each individual geocache. Name, difficulty, terrain, past logs, hints and more.

It’s time. Time to take your plundering to the next level and go truly paperless. iPlunder will allow you to download your GPX onto your iPhone or iPod Touch. You’ll have all the information you need to find those geocaches, right in the palm of your hand. Your printer (and its expensive inks) can finally take a break!

Using the latest iPhone technology, you’ll be able to map out the geocaches using street maps or satellite imagery. Using the built in GPS, you’ll be able to zero in on the cache and make the find. The geocaches won’t stand a chance, matey!

You’ll be able to take notes in the field and update the geocache’s found status. You can flag caches to find just the ones you want. You can create filters to list or map only the caches you’ve found, haven’t found, didn’t find or that you flagged.

Another great feature is the ability to email the details of your daily caching runs to yourself or others. The email includes the found status, time/date stamp, field notes and a link to the geocache’s web site, making logging a breeze.

iPlunder will work on both the iPod Touch and the iPhone. You will need internet access to update the map views, but the app will still display the geocaches in their relative positions without access. No matter where some evil micro takes you, this app will still function.

Please note, this app downloads your GPX file from a web site of your choosing. You will need to be able to place your GPX file on a web server, either in your home or on the internet, to import the GPX file. (Don’t worry, it’s easy, check out our website to see some examples).

Purchase iPlunder today and let your hunt begin, arrgg!
